Weekly Progress and Process |
I like how the main stripe came out a lot. I think there are some details that could have come out better, such as the blue and the background, but I am pleased with the overall result.

So far this week, I finished the time-lapse part and redefined the faces in it. I also touched up the nose and chin and started to cover up the black section I painted at the beginning so I can put on a light color. I’m thinking of doing a light pink, purple, or cream color but am still deciding.
This week, I met with Coach Hall for some help with making the first face more realistic. It took a long time, but I am much happier with the result now. I will continue by going over the other faces more with the new color I have chosen and making the stripy part cleaner.
Last week, I worked on finding methods to make the leftmost face more realistic. By the middle of the week, I had tried several ideas I had and wasn’t quite satisfied with the results. I decided to spend the rest of the week studying tutorials and paintings that are done in styles I admire to try to pick up some techniques for painting the face more realistically. On Monday, I tried to apply some of the new skills I learned and am happier with the results, however I think it could still use some refinement. Additionally, I have been considering background colors and think that dark red or blue, or a purple that leans slightly more towards magenta than what I’ve used in the face, could potentially work. I’m hoping that finishing the rest of the faces will help me make that decision.
This week, I tried out different strokes that might help convey a moving effect and I think that the section coming off the leftmost face might be a good option. Adding some lights and darks to that will likely help as well. I looked at time-lapse photography (especially of the sky) to help me figure out how I wanted to paint this. Eventually, I also found a picture (from the animated movie, Pocahontas, in which a similar streaky effect is used to show wind) which helped me see how I could somewhat replicate the effect using paint. The next step will be to continue with this strike over the other faces, possibly adding a curved effect to the it, and then adding more detail to the first face.
This week, I finalized the set up for the still life and started the sketch, thinking about cropping and other compositional elements. Some of the proportions are still slightly off, so the next step will be to sort that out and then begin outlining some of the details. The main issues seem to be the book, which is not quite at the right angle, and the clock, which appears somewhat lopsided. Additionally, the bear should be larger, and fixing that should also balance the composition out more. If the composition continues to appear too heavy on the left, I might consider adding a vase or other element to fill the space more.
