On Wednesday, six alums visited our school as guest speakers to talk about their experiences in art school. It was really interesting and eye-opening to learn about how they feel about art school in general and listen to the suggestions they had for us as we apply for colleges and, potentially, art schools. One of the things several of them emphasized was applying to as many things as possible. They told us that we should consider applying for numerous scholarships and programs to increase our likelihood of being accepted or winning money to help us pay for college expenses. Additionally, a few of them stressed the importance of really wanting to pursue art as a career path before deciding to go to art school because, although some art programs provide the opportunity to take other courses as well, there is also a lot of art-based learning and a lot of time goes into those courses. Finally, I really appreciated the opportunity to learn about a few of the art majors that exist. The speakers mentioned several fields of study in art, including Sculpture, Architecture, Graphic Design, Illustration, Animation, Craft and Materials, and others. Overall, this experience gave me several points for future research and a greater insight into what option may be available to me as I apply for colleges.
