I really enjoyed the lecture on Latin American Art History. I had never learned about this topic through the lens of art history before, so it was new to me. It was interesting to think about how Latin American Art gets condensed into one small, easily overlooked category despite being so rich and diverse. I remember doing a project in AP Spanish in 10th grade, where I learned about ñanduti, which is a type of lace weaving that is specific to Paraguay. Different regions have diverse and unique forms of art that definitely don’t get enough recognition. I think it would be really interesting to consider how I can incorporate some of the ideas in different Latin American art styles in my own art, but I didn’t really see my art following that path at the moment. I would, however, be interested in learning more about the specifics of art styles that originated in different Latin American regions.

This installation piece is an example of the type of work Kimsooja typically does. The artist uses a combination of mirrored surfaces, film, and natural light to create iridescent patterns that scatter across rooms like in the image shown. In this particular piece, she also played a recording of her own breathing to create a meditative atmosphere and transform the space. She has described this as an exploration of "the void within the skin of architecture." In this way, the work envelops viewers and makes it impossible not to take notice. I also really like the scattered colors and the way they appear so effortless as they move and change on every surface. Kimsooja, To Breathe, 2019. In my own work, I would want to incorporate some of the ideas I've seen about how light moves and interacts with things. Playing with different light sources in painting and trying to learn how internal light would change a composition might be really interesting to try. Another thing I might be interested in trying would be using a similar method to what I saw in Kimsooja's art to make light interact with art I've made differently. I remember learning (when we made paper sculptures) that coloring on the undersurface of paper and holding it over another piece of paper creates a colored reflection that reads like a glow, so bringing something like that into my art might be cool to try as well.
It was really cool to see the Japanese Aesthetics lecture for the second time. It helped me remember a lot of the elements that I hadn’t thought about in a long time and I learned a lot of new information too. I find the idea of centering art around the imperfections and highlighting them as a thing of beauty because, for me, it is so easy to get stuck making art that seems conventionally beautiful. I was especially fascinated by Kintsugi, which is where gold is used to mend broken ceramics and other objects. The way the imperfections are highlighted so obviously is the complete opposite of most repairs which try to hide seams and cracks. I think that considering some of the elements of Japanese Aesthetics would really benefit my art by making it seem more natural and organic, as well as helping me be looser with my process.
Urban design involves a combination of city planning, landscape design, and architecture. The main goal of urban designers is to make cities/towns more aesthetically pleasing. They might update public parks, update landscaping, add/update street furniture (like benches, trashcans, streetlights, etc.), and refresh the appearance of public transportation. In order to pursue urban design, a four degree is usually required, though many urban designers choose to pursue masters degrees as well. Students hoping to become urban designers should take courses in math, computer science, architecture, landscape architecture, real estate law, and ecology, among others. Schools like UVA, Temple University, and Cornell University have widely recognized programs for urban design.
I watched the RVArt Talk with Richmond, VA sculptor Paul DiPasquale. Watching this interview was very impactful and I feel that I learned a lot that I can apply to my own artmaking process. DiPasquale talks about how his sculptures are all made to show a specific concept. One thing that I thought was really interesting was his use of the concept of transformation, which is my current theme for my work. He showed the transformation of the surface he was working on, the ceiling, as he changed it from a normal ceiling to a water surface by adding ducks. As I have been trying to figure out how to make the broad idea of transformation into a more specific narrative, this example of some of the ways it can be applied was really inspiring. Another thing that I found to be really impactful was the idea of being a “messenger” through artmaking. DiPasquale talked about how, through his sculptures, he was able to take on the role of a messenger who conveys people’s stories to the world when they might otherwise be largely ignored. It was also interesting to hear about how he approaches the composition of his sculptures. He mentioned that all of his work is half of the subject, because that’s all he needs to get his message across.
Jewelers make jewelry from metals, diamonds, gems, and other materials, as well as clean, restore, and sell jewelry. Although there are no required credentials beyond a high school diploma, individuals who have gone to an art school or trade school typically have more opportunities in the field. Some of the best programs for jewelry design in the U.S. are: Rochester Institute of Technology, University of Kansas, California College of the Arts, and San Diego University. There are also a number of top programs outside of the U.S.
Medical illustrators work in various fields to convey complicated medical information or concepts to the public in a more understandable format. This career requires strong problem-solving skills and an in-depth understanding of the scientific concepts they are illustrating. Medical illustrators work with researchers, surgeons, publishers, and even attorneys to provide comprehensive illustrations of important concepts.
Most medical illustrators have a masters degree in medical illustration from an accredited two-year graduate program. According to ami.org, these programs typically include “basic science courses in anatomy, pathology, microanatomy, physiology, embryology, and neuroanatomy, along with specialized applied art courses such as surgical illustration.” Many medical illustrators also choose to get PhDs in related science fields or in education, depending on what setting they want to work in. As medical illustration is a graduate program, beneficial college courses include biology and related courses that would be taken for a science major, as well as art courses such as life drawing. Schools that have medical illustration programs include Duke University, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, University of North Carolina, Harvard Medical School, Stanford University School of Medicine, Vanderbilt University- College of Arts and Sciences, Northwestern University- Feinberg School of Medicine, and others. I was really interested by the Faberge egg Lunchtime Lecture because I have seen the Faberge egg display in the VMFA since I was young. It was very fascinating to learn more about the history behind them and how they influenced art and history. One of the most important things I learned was that they were extremely popular because of the way they told the story of a different world and a doomed love story. Aside from their rich history, The eggs themselves are also extremely well crafted and intricate, making them treasured items. In the future, I would love to learn more about the Faberge eggs and their significance, especially the factors that influenced the various designs on the eggs. The way that good craftsmanship made the eggs extremely popular is also important because I can apply that to my own art, focusing on good and purposeful craftsmanship in order to make my art more appealing and effective.
On Wednesday, six alums visited our school as guest speakers to talk about their experiences in art school. It was really interesting and eye-opening to learn about how they feel about art school in general and listen to the suggestions they had for us as we apply for colleges and, potentially, art schools. One of the things several of them emphasized was applying to as many things as possible. They told us that we should consider applying for numerous scholarships and programs to increase our likelihood of being accepted or winning money to help us pay for college expenses. Additionally, a few of them stressed the importance of really wanting to pursue art as a career path before deciding to go to art school because, although some art programs provide the opportunity to take other courses as well, there is also a lot of art-based learning and a lot of time goes into those courses. Finally, I really appreciated the opportunity to learn about a few of the art majors that exist. The speakers mentioned several fields of study in art, including Sculpture, Architecture, Graphic Design, Illustration, Animation, Craft and Materials, and others. Overall, this experience gave me several points for future research and a greater insight into what option may be available to me as I apply for colleges.
